What if we told you one of the best bakeries on the North Fork was run by college students? Well, it’s true.
The first time I noticed The Baker’s Workshop, at 20 East Main St. in Riverhead, I wondered what exactly it was. Turns out, it’s a training ground where Suffolk County Community College culinary arts students learn every facet of running a retail bakery. The students make delicious breakfast pastries, cupcakes, mousses and other sweets in addition to quiches, flatbread pizzas and soups for lunch — all sold to the general public like any other bakery. I personally love their eclairs.
The workshop is only open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. through July 15. I like to make my trips after noon, when all baked goods are 25% off.
